Worse Than Sodom and Gomorrah

“And you, Capernaum, who is exalted to the heaven, shall be brought down to hell. For if the mighty works which have been done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.  But I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the Day of Judgment than for you”. Mat 11:23-24

Sodom and Gomorrah have become symbols of anything false and ugly in man due to the Fall. The height of immorality and wickedness can be equated to their names. But our Lord said in Matt.11:23-24 that the case of Capernaum, Chorazin, and Bethsaida was worse than these two cities.

There was no indication that the immoralities in these cities are worse. There were no written accounts of evil men roaming the streets in their lusts. Yet their judgment will be worse than that of Sodom and Gomorrah. Why? Here is the answer: Christ lived in Capernaum. He walked in their streets and made it His headquarters. It was there that He worked some of His most mighty and marvelous deeds. Peter, Andrew, and Philip came from these cities and where our Lord did His many miracles. The feeding of the five thousand was one of them. Yet residents here went on living as if Christ had never come at all. That, my friend, is the source of their judgment.

This reality reminds us that Christ will judge us in terms of our relationship with Him. No matter how great our sins are, God will forgive us as long as we repent and come to Christ for salvation. Yet, no matter how busy we are in doing good, if our hearts are not cleansed by the blood of Christ, we will still be condemned in hell. The Bible is clear that salvation is not by works but by faith in Christ alone.

Let us ask ourselves: How is my relationship with Christ? Let us be encouraged to strengthen our relationship with Him.
